So easy-peasy! Unbelievably so! And cheap! And healthy! And did I mention easy? ;0)
Check out Kitchen Stewardship's post on why homemade yogurt is so great!
You only need these 4 things:
1. 4 quart crock pot
2. 8 cups of milk (I used homo, but you can get away with 2%)
3. 1/2 cup yogurt starter (could be any yogurt with LIVE BACTERIA, or 1/2 cup yogurt reserved from a previous batch)
4. Towel
Measure out 8 cups of milk into your crock pot. Set it on low for 2 1/2 hours.
Unplug the crock pot and let sit, covered with the towel, for 3 hours.
Stir in your yogurt starter, cover with lid, wrap towel(s) around the crock pot, and let sit for 8 hours.
Presto, change-o - YOGURT! It is smooth, creamy, plain, slightly tangy.
If you don't like straight-up plain, add in some pureed or fresh fruit.
Or drizzle on some honey or maple syrup.
My favourite combo? Honey and toasted almonds.
Yum!
Store in the fridge in a covered container. I plan on making some using the yogurt culture - you can buy them flavoured or just different styles of yogurt - but for now, this is gold!
